When to Burn Brochure

During the spring 2024 semester, TPOS partnered with Dr. Paul Zedler's Environmental Studies Capstone class at UW-Madison. The students in the class were tasked with creating a deliverable that would help support the goals of TPOS. They decided that a brochure on when to burn would be the most interesting and helpful contribution they could make to our mission.

The students were quick to recognize that questions about burn frequency and seasonality are among the most important for informing fire management decisions in our region. Remote sensing data was used to illustrate broad trends in burn timing across the region, with many more burns occurring during the spring burn window than fall burn window. They also recognized the conundrum that habitat for rare species requires fire, while individual organisms can be harmed by fire. Through this process, they also learned that fire managers in our region have expertise in both fire ecology and prescribed fire planning and operations. We’re excited to now share that brochure with all of you.

A big "Thank You" to those of you who served as reference sources for our students.
